The Secretary General is responsible for providing continuous professional managerial services and leadership for the purposes of IPMA to ensure that the objectives of IPMA, as defined in the bye-laws and the IPMA Biennial Plan, are achieved. This includes services both directly to IPMA members, IPMA customers and the support of IPMA officers. The Secretary General reports to the President of IPMA.

In IPMA internal affairs, the Secretary General is responsible for:

• ensuring preparation and implementation of the Biennial Plan for the IPMA strategy, taking account of priorities and resource contraints
• executing continuing improvement, updating and communication of strategy from the Executive Board and the Council of Delegates
• ensuring IPMA's compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
• supporting and improving the marketing of IPMA products and services to generate additional income and user benefits
• establishing and overseeing improvements to financial controls to be fully compliant with good governance and auditor's requirements
• establishing and overseeing controls and support for IPMA's portfolio of products and services
• providing senior management direction and oversight of IPMA's secretariat provided by MOS and others
